Immigrants to America
Unless you’re a native American, you are an immigrant to this country; or like most of us, you are descendant of one. Unraveling your family’s journey to get here can be a fascinating and rewarding experience. The digital age we live in has made it so much easier to trace your ancestors. There are plenty of commercial sites out there such as Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com, but there are also some that are free such as FamilySearch.org.
Valuable Resources
Family bibles, state archives, Library of Congress, census, church and military records are a staple in any genealogist’s toolbox. Don’t overlook the senior members of your family. They can be your most valuable resource. They may lead you to or verify anything you will find in your own research. It’s never too soon to start asking questions. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be too late so start this today. You can always come back to it later, but you can’t always ask questions later.
Digital Photos
It’s also never too soon to start collecting-scanning family photos and identifying the people in them. All to often when we lose a family member, we inherit a plethora of photos and we don’t know who many of the people are in them. Start doing this today even if you can’t identify everyone. As time goes by, other family members will share photos and you’ll find someone identified in them that was previously a mystery to you in the photo collection that you started.
About us
Like you, we are just one family; but we have many branches in the extended family. We have gathered a good deal of information on our immediate ancestors. We’ve traced our roots back to Ireland and Germany in the mid 19th century, but that is as far as we can go at his point. Some families are fortunate and able to trace their roots back several hundred years. The stumbling blocks doing independent research can include lack of education reading European or German records as well as the destruction of so many Irish and German church and census records. Still, more information becomes available as time goes on so we persevere. Documenting and sharing our family histories as well as resources is what we are all about.
